Pilot HandbookCHAPTER 08

Rank and clans

Climb your faction’s live ladder, wear titles nobody can buy, and fly with a squad and a clan behind you.

Experience (XP) from kills, assists and missions raises your level, and each level takes longer than the last. The step from level L to the next is:

XP to next level
round(500 × (L + 1)^2.5)

Your level is what opens the galaxy, Config 2, the Auction and your drone bays:

No level cap, a power cap

There is no level cap, but power stops growing at the top of the climb: later levels bring standing and prestige, never more strength. Your strength comes from your ship and your gear, never from your level, and nothing sells experience or levels.

Each faction ranks its own pilots on its own ladder. Six tiers, each with grades I, II and III, then two seats above them held by position: Ascendant, and Rift Sovereign for the single pilot at the top.

  1. AspirantI · II · III
  2. AviatorI · II · III
  3. RangerI · II · III
  4. LancerI · II · III
  5. MarshalI · II · III
  6. ParagonI · II · III
  1. Ascendant
  2. Rift Sovereign
  • A live ladderYour rank moves the moment you out-rank another pilot. There is no season to wait for and no weekly placement.
  • Seats at the topThe highest ranks are seats held by position. Take one by out-ranking the pilot who holds it.
  • Earned, not occupiedEvery seat needs a minimum of Rank Points, so on a new world the top seats stay open until someone earns them.
  • Identity onlyRank never adds power. Your badge shows under your ship and on your profile.

Rank Points set your place. Your profile’s MY RANK tab shows the recipe, and your Record tab where your own points come from:

Each enemy pilot destroyed
+100
Each mission finished
+20
Experience
+1 / 10,000
Honor
5 × √
Each time you are destroyed
-10
Older weeks fade, each week
-10%
Rank Points
100K + 20M + XP / 10,000 + 5√H -10D

K is the enemy pilots you destroyed, M the missions you finished and D the times you were destroyed, each fading 10% a week as it gets older; XP and H, your Honor, are your totals. The top eight ranks are 87 seats per faction; below them, every rank needs at least its minimum:

  1. Rift SovereignSeats: 1min 54,000
  2. AscendantSeats: 2min 42,000
  3. Paragon IIISeats: 3min 31,500
  4. Paragon IISeats: 5min 24,000
  5. Paragon ISeats: 8min 18,000
  6. Marshal IIISeats: 13min 13,500
  7. Marshal IISeats: 21min 9,900
  8. Marshal ISeats: 34min 7,200
  9. Lancer IIImin 5,100
  10. Lancer IImin 3,600
  11. Lancer Imin 2,400
  12. Ranger IIImin 1,650
  13. Ranger IImin 1,050
  14. Ranger Imin 600
  15. Aviator IIImin 300
  16. Aviator IImin 150
  17. Aviator Imin 130
  18. Aspirant IIImin 90
  19. Aspirant IImin 55
  20. Aspirant Imin 25

Honor is your record of the fights you have won: destroying aliens, finishing missions, and destroying enemy pilots on the contested maps. It is never spent. It adds a little to your Rank Points, and changing faction costs some of it.

Your profile’s Rankings show three boards: Rank Points, level and Honor.

A title is a label worn above your nickname, each with its own look, and you can show it in chat too. Titles are earned from deeds and mission rewards, such as Gunhand, Duellist or Veteran. No title is ever sold: not in a pack, not for Gold, not for money.

The game team can also award a few special titles for something out of the ordinary. Those cannot be earned in play or bought.

Pilots of one faction, one squad or one clan never fight each other. Everything else is better together.

  • Found a clanPay 100,000 Credits to raise your flag: a name and a tag that are unique in your world, a sigil, a colour and a description. Up to 50 pilots.
  • Join oneBrowse or search, and apply to a few at once: being accepted by one withdraws the rest. A clan takes pilots of its founder’s faction.
  • RanksLeader, Deputy, Officer and Member. Each acts only on the ranks below it, and no clan rank gives combat power.
  • NoticeboardOfficers and up post notices, and Deputies and up pin a few to the top.
  • AlliancesTwo clans can ally, across factions too: allied tags show green in the world. Either side can end it at once.
  • RosterWho is online, idle or away, a member leaderboard and clan chat. Leaving a clan starts a 24 h wait before you can join another.

A squad is for the session, up to 5 pilots. Invite a pilot by nickname, from chat or by locking their ship. Squadmates share kill rewards, scoop the squad’s crates first, and can Ping a position, call Need help to bring the squad to them, or set a course to a squadmate with Go to.

Click a name for the pilot menu: Inspect, Invite to squad, Copy nickname, Report or Block. Blocking hides that pilot’s chat on your device. Type /report nickname reason to report, and /unblock nickname to undo a block. Reports go to the moderators.

The game team flies on separate staff accounts that always carry a staff badge. In chat a staff line shows its role in its own colour: Support, Moderator, Game Master, Developer, Admin or Founder. Staff fly together as the clan [RIFT].

  • Staff never earn, rank, trade or compete: no level, no rank, no title, no place on a board. Their ships and gear are never for sale or earnable.
  • Hit by a staff ship in a fight, you lose nothing.
  • Staff speak on the Global and Squad channels.
  • A nickname that reads like a staff label is refused.
